Alumni Success Story – Joshua Tanyan

As a proud Native American Arapaho from Oklahoma, my journey to sobriety began on November 12th, 2018, when I took the courageous step of acknowledging my struggles and embracing the challenge of recovery at Design for Recovery. Little did I know that this decision would not only lead me to a life free from addiction but also to a transformative experience that would reshape my identity and sense of belonging.

From the moment I stepped through the doors of Design for Recovery, I was met with a welcoming and supportive environment that made the difficult recovery process not just bearable, but enjoyable. The staff and fellow residents created a fun and enriching atmosphere that allowed me to explore who I am and discover my place in the world.

Through the program, I formed deep, lifelong friendships with an incredible group of individuals from all walks of life. These connections have become an integral part of my support system, providing me with the strength and encouragement to face the challenges of sobriety head-on.

One of the most significant aspects of my journey at Design for Recovery has been the opportunity to reconnect with my family. As I progressed through the program, I slowly began to transform back into the son my parents once knew. The staff at Design for Recovery played a crucial role in this process, keeping my parents informed about my progress and the obstacles I encountered along the way.

Today, I am grateful for the little things I once took for granted. From apologizing when I’m wrong to managing my finances responsibly, I now approach each day with a renewed appreciation and excitement.

Design for Recovery has given me the tools and the confidence to embrace my Native American heritage while building a fulfilling life in sobriety. I am forever grateful for the unwavering support and guidance I received during my time there, and I know that the lessons I learned will continue to shape my journey for years to come.

If you’re struggling with addiction, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take that first step and reach out to Design for Recovery. Embrace the challenge, trust the process, and allow yourself to discover the joys of a life free from the chains of addiction. Your journey to recovery may not be easy, but I promise you, it will be worth it.
