Learn more about our sober living in Los Angeles
Design for Recovery implements a structured, 12 Step-based program centered on the principles of honesty, integrity, accountability, responsibility, and service to rebuild the lives of men desperate to break free from the chains of their addiction.
As a structured sober living home, Design for Recovery stands apart from other sober living homes. Many sober living homes are merely places for sober people to eat, sleep, and take shelter. Design for Recovery goes the extra mile by implementing a rigorous program of character building, and peer support.
When an individual moves into one of our sober living homes, they won’t just be taking it easy — they will be working every day to develop the skills and tools they need for long term sobriety.
Sober living homes are often recommended to individuals who have graduated from formal treatment programs like inpatient treatment centers, partial hospitalization programs, and medical detox centers. In these cases, residency at a sober living home is considered part of an aftercare treatment plan.
Sober living homes in Los Angeles like Design for Recovery are used to make a gradual transition from the insular world of a treatment center to the more chaotic and unpredictable outside world. At a sober living home, graduates of treatment centers can continue to practice the skills and tools they previously learned.
Moreover, they can do so in a safe and supportive place among peers who are similarly committed to sobriety. Research shows that individuals who spend more time in aftercare programs, such as a sober living home, have lower rates of relapse than people who are over-eager to return to their prior lives after finishing rehab.
Our mission is to be more than just a transitional stopgap between a formal treatment center and the outside world. Design for Recovery is committed to being effective in its own right. Using a variety of services— like one-on-one mentoring, peer-support meetings, medication monitoring and support — Design for Recovery works with young men to ensure that they aren’t merely practicing tools they’ve already learned, but building new ones.
Building a Life for Long-Term Sobriety
At Design for Recovery, we understand that sobriety is about more than just abstaining from drugs and alcohol. While physical sobriety is the foundation upon which recovery rests, removing drugs and alcohol from the body alone is rarely sufficient to ensure long term sobriety.
People turn to drugs and alcohol to escape from a wide variety of conditions, including mental illness, poverty, trauma, and codependent or abusive relationships. The staff at Design for Recovery works with every resident on an individual basis so that they can make progress in these pivotal areas of their lives.
It is a hands-on approach that focuses on looking within to better ensure long-term success beyond the walls of sober living.
It is Design for Recovery’s philosophy that sobriety entails more than just the absence of drugs and alcohol, but an entire way of life. Individuals who withdraw from drugs and alcohol and immediately return to their former lives are often driven to relapse. They return to damaged relationships where substance abuse is the norm.
They return to their damaged family lives. They return to unemployment, precarious employment, or homelessness. They return to lives wrecked by legal problems and debt. They return to depression, anxiety, and fear. Rather than help getting people “sober” and then sending them home, Design for Recovery is committed to helping residents build an entirely new life in sobriety.
To that end, Design for Recovery works with each resident individually to resolve the challenges they face and help them face the opportunities that sobriety offers. Through peer support, our residents develop new ways to handle stressful or triggering situations they might face in the outside world.
Design for Recovery also offers a number of helpful resources, ranging from money management to employment support. Our residents obtain employment while living at Design for Recovery. Many enroll in school to begin new careers.
They work diligently to repair the damage wrought by addiction, including healing relationships, getting out of debt, and tackling seemingly insurmountable legal difficulties. By the time an individual is ready to move out of their sober living home, they are already set up for a new, healthy, and fulfilling life in sobriety

Design for Recovery's Sober Community
Sober living homes are the best way to extend a person’s recovery program. A study on sober living in The Journal of Psychiatric Drugs showed that the benefits of sober living homes are not limited to merely lowering rates of relapse.
Residents measurably improve in terms of their employment outcomes, academic success, psychiatric symptoms, and even likelihood of getting arrested. Because sober living homes focus on providing holistic help to each resident, graduates emerge not just clean and sober, but prepared to live successful sober lives.
The social support group that young men find at Design for Recovery is a gift that goes beyond merely being a tool for avoiding relapse. During active addiction, many people suffer from loneliness, alienation, and fear. While pursuing sobriety at Design for Recovery, these formerly hopeless and isolated young men enter a community of like-minded individuals where they can develop friendships and become leaders.
