Design for Recovery offers sober living Los Angeles based homes for men to gain life skills, find community, and receive support for life-long sobriety.

Our sober living Los Angeles homes are designed to be a safe and supportive environment where young men struggling with substance abuse can focus on developing a strong foundation for long-term sobriety. Our highly experienced staff use a variety of approaches firmly rooted in the 12 Steps of Recovery.

Residents work to examine the underlying issues behind their drug or alcohol addiction, develop new skills and coping strategies, and learn how to live a happy, joyous, and free life in newfound sobriety. Graduates of Design for Recovery’s sober living program go on to achieve their goals. Even years later, graduates continue to rely on the support of the sober community they formed at Design for Recovery, and many remain involved in the workings of the house.

Design for Recovery Intro Video

You are not in this alone. We believe that recovery from addiction is best achieved with the support of a larger community.

Residents at our home have the opportunity to build a strong sober social support system following detox or addiction treatment. People who have similarly suffered from addiction are the people who are most likely to understand what you are going through. Living together with a group of individuals who are all working together to treat their addictions is a profound experience. Not only do newly sober residents benefit from the support and advice of those with more time sober, but as an individual progresses along their own path they often find that being a support for others is the most healing activity.

It is the philosophy of Design for Recovery that long-term recovery is achieved through rigorous action, not merely the state of physical abstinence from drugs or alcohol. Design for Recovery’s sober living program is highly structured. Every day, residents at our Los Angeles sober living homes follow a daily schedule, set goals, and work to better themselves as people.

Our program is strongly rooted in the principles of honesty, integrity, accountability, service, and responsibility. Many people come to Design for Recovery after repeatedly trying and failing to get sober at other sober living facilities and recovery residences. These young men, who often arrive broken and despondent, undergo a radical transformation during their time at Design for Recovery, ultimately emerging as confident, free, and — above all — sober young men.

Los Angeles Sober Living Services

Design for Recovery offers a range of recovery tools for individuals who are working to get relief from the obsessive desire to engage in substance abuse.

Over the course of each day, residents take part in a number of solo and group activities that facilitate recovery from substance use disorder. Not only do residents work to obtain sobriety in the here-and-now, they gain skills and strategies that will lower their likelihood of relapse even years down the line.

Our program is firmly rooted in the principles of 12 Step Recovery Programs, as originally laid out by Alcoholics Anonymous. During their time at Design for Recovery, residents attend daily meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. Doing so allows them to expand their sober social support group beyond the confines of the sober living home and into the broader world.

By the time an individual graduates from Design for Recovery, they will already have strong relationships in place at recovery meetings throughout Los Angeles County, leaving them well-prepared for sober life outside the walls of sober living. Residents also work through all of the 12 steps during their time at Design for Recovery, working with sober mentors or sponsors, who provide a wealth of first-hand experience in recovering from addiction.

Design for Recovery is committed to the idea that recovery from drug addiction is about more than just the removal of substances from the body. The process of recovery involves dealing with the underlying issues behind the addiction as well as developing the tools and coping strategies required for long term success in sober life down the road. Men's Sober Living Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles, both the county and the city, is an expansive and diverse place. Nestled between mountains and the Pacific coast, Los Angeles is also only a short drive away from desert terrain. This quintessential West Coast city is relatively close to the Mexican border, which only further strengthens its cultural richness.

Los Angeles has a population of 3,990,456 people, making it the second most populated city in the United States, following New York City. This population is diverse in terms of socioeconomic status and ethnic make-up. Due to Los Angeles’ proximity to the Mexican border, the city has become something of a haven for immigrants seeking a new life. 48.5% of the population identifies as hispanic or latino. 11% of the population identifies as Asian and 10% as African American.

As a result, Los Angeles possesses a culture that is more diverse and extremely tolerant of human differences. Unfortunately, the socioeconomic differences within Los Angeles are less representative of diversity and are more indicative of tragic income disparities. While Los Angeles is known for its wealth and for the Beverly Hills mansions of the rich and famous, much of Los Angeles’ population lives below the poverty line. 22% of the city’s population qualifies as living in poverty, which means almost one fourth of the city struggles to afford food and rent. Even the average household income of $49,497 is somewhat insufficient for many, given that Los Angeles has a far higher cost of living than most American cities.

Los Angeles is a powerhouse for many industries, but it is certainly most well-known for being the center of the entertainment industry. Countless media companies call Los Angeles their home, and it remains the top location for filming movies and television shows. As a result, countless people come to Los Angeles every year hoping to realize their personal dreams and ambitions. In some ways, Los Angeles is a fantasy land.

While many people do achieve amazing success in Los Angeles, others get lost in the mire of the mirage and turn to other sources for satisfaction, such as drugs and alcohol. With its extreme poverty and the pressures associated with unrealistic fantasies of the “good life,” it’s no surprise that Los Angeles is also home to many drug addicts.

Los Angeles is currently being heavily impacted by the opioid crisis, and substance abuse continues to rear its ugly head in many other forms as well. Mexican drug cartels have a powerful presence in Los Angeles, distributing and selling various substances, including crystal meth and fentanyl. While substance use disorder is a huge problem in Los Angeles, the city is also home to a wide variety of treatment facilities and sober living homes.

More Information about Los Angeles

Despite its reputation for glitz and glamour, Los Angeles has also been known to a major epicenter for drug abuse in the United States. The reasons behind Los Angeles’ substance abuse problems are complex. Socioeconomic factors impact the problem in a major way. Much of the population of Los Angeles suffers from significant poverty, and high levels of homelessness and crime also drive many people to take refuge in addictive substances.

Untreated mental illness is more prevalent among much of this disenfranchised population, and self-medication via recreational drugs is more accessible for many people than psychiatrists. Even among the well-to-do, drug use has a major presence. In the entertainment industry and what many refer to as Hollywood’s “dream factory, partying and designer drugs are par for the course. It should come as no surprise, then, that addiction afflicts people from all walks of life throughout Los Angeles.

In addition to socioeconomic factors, geography contributes to Los Angeles’ substance abuse problem. Los Angeles’ close proximity to the Mexican border means that many of the Mexican drug cartels use Los Angeles as a major base for their operations, distributing drugs originating from Mexico itself as well as South America. As a result, Los Angeles has been named a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) by the federal government. While in recent years the most problematic substances have been synthetic opioids like fentanyl, these criminal enterprises sell and distribute other drugs in large quantities as well, including crystal meth, heroin, and cocaine.

Los Angeles’ reputation as an epicenter for drug addiction has a long history. Some experts believe that Los Angeles was the origin of the crack cocaine epidemic, which ran from the 1980s to the late 90s. Crack cocaine, a concentrated form of cocaine that is both cheaper and more accessible, is also far more addictive. During the crack cocaine epidemic, impoverished communities in Los Angeles were the most heavily impacted.

Addiction to crack cocaine in Los Angeles not only stole lives, but it wrecked families, increased poverty, and contributed to rising crime rates. Fortunately, while crack cocaine is less of a widespread problem now in Los Angeles, other drugs were quick to take its place. Methamphetamine increased in popularity, with similarly disastrous effects. Today, an opioid epidemic is taking place, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl claiming countless lives every day.

For young people, drug overdose has overtaken automobile accidents as the number one cause of premature death. This is particularly true in California, which consistently has the fourth highest number of drug overdose deaths in the United States. 4,868 lives were lost due to drug overdose in 2017 alone. Opioids, which take on average 464 lives every year, are in large part responsible for these harrowing statistics. While drug use does not always result in a fatal overdose, nonfatal overdoses and medical problems associated with substance abuse significantly tax Los Angeles’ medical infrastructure.

The opioid epidemic has resulted in the rate of hospitalizations and emergency room visits increasing by 31% and 51% respectively. Because drug addiction affects people of different financial means unequally, there are, of course, many individuals who cannot even make use of these medical services. Others find themselves in considerable medical debt even after having survived an overdose — and remain addicted! The effects of Los Angeles’ addiction problem are manifest in every aspect of life, affecting individual health, families’ ability to stay together, financial well-being, and crime rates.

Los Angeles and its vicinity, which includes Long Beach and Santa Ana, are usually grouped together for statistical purposes. Research has shown that within Los Angeles, 8.7% of residents 12 years of age and older were found to suffer from substance use disorders. That amounts to 892,000 individuals, many of them minors.

Unfortunately, many of these individuals are unable or unwilling to seek treatment. The statistics also do not account for the countless individuals who haven’t received a formal diagnosis of substance use disorder. The reasons people are not treated or counted stem from drug addiction itself, which results in increased mental illness, shattered families, crime, and decreased quality of life — consequences that limit a person’s access to crucial resources.

Many people suffering from substance use disorders avoid asking for help because of the stigma surrounding addiction. The United States, and Los Angeles in particular, promotes a pick-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps value system, wherein individuals are expected to rise above life’s challenges through sheer force of will. Unfortunately, addiction is never cured through willpower alone, since it actually operates by suppressing an individual’s ability to freely make choices.

The only way to get relief is to seek outside help. Fortunately, Los Angeles has an enormous sober community and a variety of treatment centers and sober living environments from which to choose. Sober life is possible even for people who have seemingly lost everything due to addiction. It’s just a matter of recognizing the problem and seeking help.
