Learn more about our sober living in Los Angeles
Design for Recovery implements a structured, 12 Step-based program centered on the principles of honesty, integrity, accountability, responsibility, and service to rebuild the lives of men desperate to break free from the chains of their addiction.
As a structured sober living home, Design for Recovery stands apart from other sober living homes. Many sober living homes are merely places for sober people to eat, sleep, and take shelter. Design for Recovery goes the extra mile by implementing a rigorous program of character building, and peer support.
When an individual moves into one of our sober living homes, they won’t just be taking it easy — they will be working every day to develop the skills and tools they need for long term sobriety.
Sober living homes are often recommended to individuals who have graduated from formal treatment programs like inpatient treatment centers, partial hospitalization programs, and medical detox centers. In these cases, residency at a sober living home is considered part of an aftercare treatment plan.
Sober living homes in Los Angeles like Design for Recovery are used to make a gradual transition from the insular world of a treatment center to the more chaotic and unpredictable outside world. At a sober living home, graduates of treatment centers can continue to practice the skills and tools they previously learned.
Moreover, they can do so in a safe and supportive place among peers who are similarly committed to sobriety. Research shows that individuals who spend more time in aftercare programs, such as a sober living home, have lower rates of relapse than people who are over-eager to return to their prior lives after finishing rehab.
Our mission is to be more than just a transitional stopgap between a formal treatment center and the outside world. Design for Recovery is committed to being effective in its own right. Using a variety of services— like one-on-one mentoring, peer-support meetings, medication monitoring and support — Design for Recovery works with young men to ensure that they aren’t merely practicing tools they’ve already learned, but building new ones.
Building a Life for Long-Term Sobriety
At Design for Recovery, we understand that sobriety is about more than just abstaining from drugs and alcohol. While physical sobriety is the foundation upon which recovery rests, removing drugs and alcohol from the body alone is rarely sufficient to ensure long term sobriety.
People turn to drugs and alcohol to escape from a wide variety of conditions, including mental illness, poverty, trauma, and codependent or abusive relationships. The staff at Design for Recovery works with every resident on an individual basis so that they can make progress in these pivotal areas of their lives.
It is a hands-on approach that focuses on looking within to better ensure long-term success beyond the walls of sober living.
It is Design for Recovery’s philosophy that sobriety entails more than just the absence of drugs and alcohol, but an entire way of life. Individuals who withdraw from drugs and alcohol and immediately return to their former lives are often driven to relapse. They return to damaged relationships where substance abuse is the norm.
They return to their damaged family lives. They return to unemployment, precarious employment, or homelessness. They return to lives wrecked by legal problems and debt. They return to depression, anxiety, and fear. Rather than help getting people “sober” and then sending them home, Design for Recovery is committed to helping residents build an entirely new life in sobriety.
To that end, Design for Recovery works with each resident individually to resolve the challenges they face and help them face the opportunities that sobriety offers. Through peer support, our residents develop new ways to handle stressful or triggering situations they might face in the outside world.
Design for Recovery also offers a number of helpful resources, ranging from money management to employment support. Our residents obtain employment while living at Design for Recovery. Many enroll in school to begin new careers.
They work diligently to repair the damage wrought by addiction, including healing relationships, getting out of debt, and tackling seemingly insurmountable legal difficulties. By the time an individual is ready to move out of their sober living home, they are already set up for a new, healthy, and fulfilling life in sobriety
Design for Recovery's Sober Community
Sober living homes are the best way to extend a person’s recovery program. A study on sober living in The Journal of Psychiatric Drugs showed that the benefits of sober living homes are not limited to merely lowering rates of relapse.
Residents measurably improve in terms of their employment outcomes, academic success, psychiatric symptoms, and even likelihood of getting arrested. Because sober living homes focus on providing holistic help to each resident, graduates emerge not just clean and sober, but prepared to live successful sober lives.
The social support group that young men find at Design for Recovery is a gift that goes beyond merely being a tool for avoiding relapse. During active addiction, many people suffer from loneliness, alienation, and fear. While pursuing sobriety at Design for Recovery, these formerly hopeless and isolated young men enter a community of like-minded individuals where they can develop friendships and become leaders.

Excellent choice for anyone in need of support through challenging times in their lives. My brother entered the program almost 4 years ago and has never looked back. Now actually employed within the company and able to help others as they connect with him well knowing he has been in their shoes at one time! Been the best choice of his life and I couldn’t be prouder of him or the staff who helped him get there!
Damon McCrystalIf I have ever felt truly apart of something positive, it would be Design For Recovery. I’ve spent alot of time in and out through different programs, some good, some bad, but nothing even comes close to the experience that I’ve had, and am still having at this place. Truly blessed and grateful that something has actually given me my life back. Professional staff, clean homes, and people that actually care about seeing you succeed. Thank you DFR!
Taylor AullMy son has been living in a sober living home which has taught him how to control his addiction and become a better person. This house is very well maintained and beautiful. Because they have gone through the program themselves and are familiar with it, house managers are able to guide you during the whole process. Attending meetings on a weekly basis and keeping a clean environment contributed to his growth.
Alice BlackIn my opinion, this is one of the TOP resources that contributed to saving my son’s life. Staff and managers go above and beyond to make sure your transition after detox or rehab is as smooth as possible. If you’re truly committed to your recovery, then this is the place for you. The house is comfortable and in an excellent location. Choosing a sober living home in Los Angeles for my son was the best decision I could have made.
Camille JonesMy son Zachary was at his breaking point his mother and I had sent him to multiple rehabilitation centers and other sober livings. Nothing seemed to work. Then Design For Recovery gave Zach the gift of the opportunity to recover from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. The accountability within the house is amazing. The loving and understanding kindness of the staff gave him a good example of how to conduct himself as a sober person. (1/2)
Juana BlackZach was never told what to do just given the opportunity to do it with kind understanding, guidance and direction. It was very clear to us that he was in a great place that genuinely cared about sobriety. The opportunity that Zach was given of a safe, sound and sane place to be at while he recovered from this horrific addiction has allowed him to re-establish my relationships with us, his family, Zach’s life was literally saved in this place I will forever be grateful for Design. Juana BlackDesign For Recovery’s sober living environment is definitely the best I’ve ever sent my son to for sure. Micah has been to other places that were not even close in comparison. If you follow their rules and actually open your mind up to new ways of living you won’t regret it. I recommend their sober living for those who really need a structured environment to grow in, the way they have it set up will definitely help change the way you view or do things for the better. It has truly set my son on the right path. Thank you Design!
Benjamin E. PalazzoloDesign For Recovery is a great place to send a loved one or yourself. Very attentive staff and great therapists. They really care about the clients and offer AA meetings to go to every night. The scenery is beautiful and the houses are incredible. The owner is a really great guy who honestly cares about what he's doing.
