Addiction wreaks havoc in a person’s financial life. Most young men in active addiction are unable to manage their own money. They are driven to spend every last cent on drugs or alcohol. Even those with money to spare often spend impulsively during drug-fueled binges.

There is evidence that addiction goes hand in hand with impulsivity. Part of getting sober involves learning to make decisions with the future in mind, which often entails sacrificing short-term pleasures in favor of long-term investments. In the early days of sobriety, however, it is essential to develop these essential skills which help lay the foundation for a prosperous and financially stable sober life. At Design for Recovery, we believe that no one can achieve sobriety alone. Individual willpower isn’t sufficient to tackle a substance use disorder, which distorts a person’s thinking and behavior patterns. By entering a community of like-minded young men who are all working together to recover from the same condition, new residents will finally be able to openly discuss their problems without fear of being misunderstood.

Addiction is a family disease. Interpersonal relations and habits formed early on in a family context affect a person’s likelihood of developing a substance use disorder. As such, recovering from an addiction is almost never a matter of helping one individual exclusively. It is important to look at the entire context of an individual’s life, including family members and loved ones.

Our residents work to repair damaged relationships with family members, improve their social conduct, and make amends for prior damages. It is also worth noting that people who have addictions are not the only ones who suffer. Living with or loving a young man who habitually harms himself and abuses substances is incredibly painful. Young men often experience a number of different difficulties with employment during their active addiction. They may struggle to find work at all, suffer consequences from poor job performance, or live paycheck-to-paycheck while working a combination of low-skilled precarious part-time jobs. At Design for Recovery, we believe that sobriety is about more than just remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol. It is about building a new life.
