The Home

Playa Del Rey Sober Living 1

Design for Recovery’s Playa Del Rey sober living home provides a safe and comfortable base for young men to involve themselves in the community and to thrive as new and growing individuals.

Built in 2007 with a dramatic architectural style, our Playa Del Rey home offers all modern amenities. This spacious home boasts almost 4,500 square feet. With 5 bedrooms, the residence offers residents the best in luxury living. Bedrooms feature walk-in closets, distressed hardwood flooring, and balconies. Each bedroom comes with its own private bathroom, which has granite counters, multiple showerheads, and tumbled travertine tile.

The family room, which residents use to relax and hold house meetings, has its own fireplace and a skylight. Perhaps more importantly, this is where our entertainment system is. Boasting a high-end television and surround sound, residents often congregate in the family room for recreation. Built-in bookshelves offer residents opportunities to educate themselves or get lost in a story. A sliding glass door opens up to a patio and yard, where residents often go to exercise or blow off steam.

The kitchen is designed for gourmet cooking, and residents take advantage of its cutting edge appliances to cook healthy and delicious meals for themselves — and often for the house residents as a group. Granite counters, a center island, stainless steel appliances, and a walk-in pantry make it ideal for any budding chef. An eating area with a bay window offers residents a relaxing alcove in which to dine together.

Living in such a nice home can in some ways feel like a luxury vacation, but at Design for Recovery we see this as an opportunity for growth, skill-acquisition, and character-building as well. Residents work daily to maintain the home. Daily chores and cleaning duties allow them to take responsibility for their own living arrangements. While new residents may at first find this arduous, given enough time, most of our young men come to take pride in making their own home clean, comfortable, and livable.

Services Offered

Through the application of a supportive community and an environment that uses principled living as the main ingredient for change, design for recovery helps young men find a passion for life within themselves.

Family Services

Addiction is a family disease. Interpersonal relations and habits formed early on in a family context affect a person’s likelihood of developing a substance use disorder. As such, recovering from an addiction is almost never a matter of helping one individual exclusively. It is important to look at the entire context of an individual’s life, including family members and loved ones. Our residents work to repair damaged relationships with family members, improve their social conduct, and make amends for prior damages. It is also worth noting that people who have addictions are not the only ones who suffer. Living with or loving a young man who habitually harms himself and abuses substances is incredibly painful. At Design for Recovery, we recognize that family members often have their own healing journeys to undergo. With all that in mind, Design for Recovery involves families as much as possible throughout the recovery process. We invite and encourage family members to take an active role in their loved one’s journey to get clean and sober.

One-on-One Mentoring

At Design for Recovery, we believe that no one can achieve sobriety alone. Individual willpower isn’t sufficient to tackle a substance use disorder, which distorts a person’s thinking and behavior patterns. By entering a community of like-minded young men who are all working together to recover from the same condition, new residents will finally be able to openly discuss their problems without fear of being misunderstood. One-on-one mentoring allows them to receive support, learn valuable skills, and restructure their lives from the ground up. We ensure that each recovering person is better prepared to meet the challenges of everyday life and receives the individualized attention they deserve

Medication Monitoring

Most people with addictions suffer from a number of other conditions as well. Having an addiction increases the likelihood that a person will develop physical and mental health disorders. Likewise, those with mental illness tend to turn to addictive substances as a form of self-medication. For many, getting help for addiction is an opportunity to recognize, often for the very first time, a need to recover from these other underlying conditions. Having comorbid conditions can complicate the recovery process, but Design for Recovery is committed to offering all residents the care and individualized approach they need. This often includes a combination of mentoring and pharmacological treatments. With a trained and dedicated staff on call 24 hours a day, every medication is diligently monitored, counted, and tracked in a well-organized filing system.

Money Management

Addiction wrecks havoc in a person’s financial life. Most young men in active addiction are unable to manage their own money. They are driven to spend every last cent on drugs or alcohol. Even those with money to spare often spend impulsively during drug-fueled binges. There is evidence that addiction goes hand in hand with impulsivity. Part of getting sober involves learning to make decisions with the future in mind, which often entails sacrificing short term pleasures in favor of long term investments. In the early days of sobriety, however, it is essential to develop these essential skills which help lay the foundation for a prosperous and financially stable sober life. At Design for Recovery, clients learn the importance of budgeting and how to implement it in their lives.

Employment Support

Young men often experience a number of different difficulties with employment during their active addiction. They may struggle to find work at all, suffer consequences from poor job performance, or live paycheck-to-paycheck while working a combination of low-skilled precarious part-time jobs. At Design for Recovery, we believe that sobriety is about more than just remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol. It is about building a new life. To that end, we work with residents to help them find jobs, develop career goals, and formulate plans to achieve their ambitions. Employment support is part of a unique evidence-based approach at Design for Recovery, one where the focus is on long-term sobriety and financial independence beyond the walls of sober living

Our Mission

Design for Recovery implements a structured, 12 Step-based program centered on the principles of honesty, integrity, accountability, responsibility, and service to rebuild lives. We understand that addiction is a complicated disorder that affects all aspects of a person’s life. We also recognize that achieving sobriety is about more than merely staying away from addictive substances; real sobriety is an ongoing process involving rebuilding ones life from the ground up. We aim to provide our residents with the skills and tools they need to live happy, free, and prosperous lives in sobriety. While developing these skills, residents repair relationships and reflect on the underlying issues that drove them to addiction.

However, no one gets sober alone. Addiction is often referred to as a disease of isolation. As such, we believe it is crucial that residents recover in a community context, forging relationships with other young men who are similarly committed to living quality sober lives. The relationships that young men develop at Design for Recovery remain with them years after graduation. As residents work on their own recovery, they place themselves in a stronger position to help others and become mentors and leaders in the recovery community. At Design for Recovery, we believe that a sober social support system is not only a strong bulwark against relapse — but also the foundation for a joyous life down the road.
